The Italian Garden (1st February 2023)

Press Officer Rick Purnell writes..........

Secret Garden discovered at Great Ambrook House

At our February meeting, Teignmouth Probus Club was entertained by a fascinating illustrated talk on the Italian Garden at Great Ambrook by Angela Dodd-Crompton. This magical place was created in Edwardian times, lost in the early 1960s and rediscovered under a bramble and ivy-infested wood near Ipplepen in the late 1980s. The story started with the discovery of this secluded ‘lost garden’, finding out who created it, its successive owners, leading to researching of both the garden and the many people involved to the present day. It was granted GradeII Listing in 2014 and is a Heritage site garden of interest. The extensive gardens are still under restoration aided by a willing band of volunteers.  A Google search reveals more information.

The vote of thanks was given by member Peter Lewis.

The next meeting is on 15th February at Richard Newton Hall Community Centre 10:00am. Our speaker is Neil Howard talking about ‘The Teignmouth Cemetery, Those that Dwell within’.
