Music of James Bond 5th November 25

Teignmouth Probus Club’s November meeting was novel and unexpectedly special as Speaker Paul Scott a South Devon Radio presenter (Sax) a talented amateur musician with his pal Phil Evans (Bass Guitar) played music to the James Bond movies whilst watching a film show of every ‘kill’ seen in the franchise. (guess how many?). Interesting anecdotes were given of the Author Ian Flemming, the Composers John Barry’s orchestral backing and David Arnold’s electronic adventures, together with the singers, Shirley Bassey, Mat Monroe, Adel and tales about the several actors who played ‘Bond’,

Some 12 theme tunes were played from Dr. No, Diamonds are Forever, For Your Eyes Only, From Russia with Love, Gold Finger, Moonraker, On Her Majesties Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me, You Only Live Twice, Thunderball through to Adel’s Skyfall for the encore.

During the presentation members were quizzed on the Bond Girls’ names and who played them. Surprisingly the audience ‘got them all’. A highlight was a musical demonstration into the insights of how music set the mood and expectancy of danger and anticipation and doom with the use of particular chords to add drama with climbing chords. Everyone was so captivated and immersed in Bond and his adventures that the session overran the usual meeting time. Past Chairman Malcolm Adams proposed the vote of thanks and finally the film clips of the number of ‘kills’ lasted the whole show. …… the carnage was 647 blown up, shot, bombed, stabbed, strangled, drowned, poisoned and ever which way!!
