Beauty By Roger Hamilton 7th May 2025

A popular returning speaker/story teller, Roger Hamilton entertained Teignmouth Mens Probus club with a stimulating debate of his take on ‘Beauty’ with many breathtaking images to illustrate his emotions and feelings on the subject. The opening shots were Earth from space as seen only by astronauts, sand dunes of the Sahara, Tassili mountains, New Zealand’s southern alps and other magnificent beauty in the natural world such as a rainbow or early morning mists in the Grand Canyon. The philosophers of old have managed to scientifically define ‘beauty’ and perfection, promulgating the Golden Ratio also associated with the Fibonacci Sequence (look up in Google) a perfect example in nature is the shape of marine Nautilus spiral. These principles applied to most famous art works give some meaning and understanding how/why some artists have produced works in world opinion to be items of sublime beauty stimulation human pressure centres.  Photos of The Mona Lisa , the sculpture or ‘David’, the Japanese Artist’s ‘Blue Wave’ and other examples in architecture proved the point that Roger had convinced us all that ’beauty’ is everywhere. To Roger the sight of a Victorian traction engine swishing and puffing and gleaming in full steam is a most beautiful experience. The conclusion was that truth and beauty was in the eyes of the beholder.

The vote of thanks and appreciation was proposed by member Peter Lewis who by reciting from the works of Shakespear on the subject that there is beauty, eloquence and symmetry in the spoken word too.

As there was to be no funeral, at his and wife Jenny’s bequest, the members retired to the bar, to celebrate the life of our long serving and popular member Harry Sullivan with a hearty toast and farewell who sadly died after a short illness on the 27th April aged 93. Cheers Harry!
